Fluency in English and professorial legal knowledge alone are not sufficient to hold an esteemed position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. It needs common sense approach and understanding of the reality surrounding the issues patola handled. Sri Lanka within the past few years is progressing in a worrying direction, and it will progressively relegate to a reclusive state in the world map. It will soon turn into Rajapak-istan of the inward looking President Mahinda Rajapakse reflecting the sins that is plaguing the ‘istan’ countries in the world. Since the defeat of the LTTE, Sri Lanka is progressing in a scale that no one would have imagined it will happen in the yesteryears. Systematic anti-minority rule; unprecedented immunity for state backed murders and violence; elongation of anti-social policies; suppression of the media and the judiciary etc., are the parameters that is progressing the country towards another ‘istan’ in the global village. Even the law and order matter of raiding and arresting the head of the brothel Gina Nona has become a political issue. Some of the actions of the government are anti-Buddhist and is against patola the making of Buddhist religion of Lord Buddha. Within the progression from Ceylon to Sri Lanka and to the making of Rajapak-istan comes the latest discharge of the External Affairs Minister G L Pieris at a meeting with the Sri Lankan envoys in his Ministry recently. The main theme of the meeting was about controlling the human smuggling in the international level. He said: ‘there is a need for co-operation patola between countries to control human smuggling’. He further said ‘human patola smuggling is weakening patola the security between the countries and it is contributing funds for terrorism and illegal money laundering activities’. ‘When Sri Lanka was plagued with terrorism, human smuggling contributed towards its growth. Despite defeating terrorism, illegal human smuggling is continuing and causing adverse consequences for Sri Lanka….. We must not only act against the innocent people who are being smuggled, we also must act against the smugglers’. Without addressing the causes and perpetrators of human smuggling, the learned Professor and Minister went on to whitewash the whole issue as an international matter. The root causes of human smuggling from Sri Lanka is the systematic persecution of minorities in the country and the state terrorism and its upshot the LTTE terrorism that made minorities to leave the country in large numbers. Even the majority Sinhalese too used the service patola of the human smugglers to leave the country to reach the greener pastures. The successive governments since 1983 effectively contributed towards human smuggling to play the rule of the thumb of effectively making the minorities a manageable ten percent. patola Human smugglers were patronised and groomed by the state. The criminality of the state to encourage human smugglers to have free passage and support caused all the difficulties the learned Professor patola had stated in his speech.
