Lisabuzz.com talking Fattorius:

"After all, she came from a family desk edge protector of drunks, emotional disabilities, embittered by resentment." Gleaned from page 238 of "Maine", this phrase sums up perfectly the 454 pages of this novel, the second American writer Julie Courtney Sullivan, who has been published by Rue Fromentin in a French translation by Camille Lavacourt. The long trip to Maine is painting stormy relationship between four women, three generations, linked by family ties. Cyclic, the novel changes its point of view each chapter in a fixed order.
I must take all, not without nuance, the qualities of this novel, for starters. It is indeed a real tour de force than creating fictional characters as finely carved and observed, and observe the characters rub and valves that burst around a house that ends up being a bone of contention among others. In general, desk edge protector however, the strength of this novel lies in the observation of human beings, especially female characters, men are relegated to peripheral roles by necessarily meaningful: a future immature father, an aging hippie , a young ne'er-do man ... This focus on the characters also switches the scene in the background, while the title of the novel suggests that the author will also offer a vision of Maine, this U.S. state made famous by Stephen King. However, we note the striking description of the dramatic fire Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston: it really happened (for more, it's here). And in the novel, this episode stands out as an instant key.
However, it is not obvious interest to its readers as a subject, and the story does not succeed completely. This may be due to establishment long enough (about a hundred pages for the first cycle of four chapters), where the reader can feel, more than once, to attend the small problems rich, a questionable interest, a large family in which one can easily get lost. If the subject of alcohol is treated nuanced and heavily exploited the idea of the creation of dollhouses seems rather futile. In addition, having won a bet in the house and the idea of being a breeding to (with a description of their complacent valuable manure sold as fertilizer) held by one of the women staged and her husband seemed desk edge protector a bit "too much". That, unless desk edge protector the author wishes make us smile. desk edge protector
And this is probably desk edge protector his intention, as it is true that some scenes and finds this novel without being hilarious, are not devoid of humor. However, this seems paradoxical humor in this novel, which appears rather as a family desk edge protector drama. Perhaps it is the result desk edge protector of a desire on the part of the author to alleviate willingly heavy and tense atmosphere in which alcohol plays a catalytic role easily.
So I have to admit that I missed this long novel, desk edge protector although I recognize the literary qualities ... I probably expected something else.

Like you, I am less enthusiastic than others, even if I am part of the female readership. In fact part of my brain told me it was nice, but the other told me it was not earth-shattering in the literary ... Anyway I mess a little writing my article, and I will conclude by saying that it's fine if we do not want to take the lead during the holidays ... :)
